When Rick joined The Matchmaking Company, he knew that opening his heart again would require courage. He had lost his wife, whom he described as the love of his life, after a two-year battle with cancer.
Rick treasured the life they had created, but he did not want his grief to become the end of his story. At 74, he still felt energetic and eager to experience more of the world. He hoped to find a warm, giving woman who wanted to enjoy life alongside him.
“I want to live life and have a woman to share it with,” he said. “I don’t want to waste away.”
As a client in the Best of You program, Rick received both matchmaking and coaching support throughout his journey. His matchmaker came to know him as a genuine gentleman with a big heart, an active spirit, and a wonderful sense of humor. Faith was an important part of his life, and he also hoped to meet someone who would be ready to pack a suitcase, explore Europe, and walk a few miles beside him once they arrived.
Dottie was looking for much the same thing.
A retired accountant and devoted Christian, Dottie filled her weekends with baking, visits to the farmers market, and time with the people she loved. She attended church each Sunday and volunteered with a nonprofit that serves meals to people in need.
Dottie had continued to believe in love through three marriages and the difficult lessons that came with them. By the time she met Rick, she had a clearer understanding of the relationship she wanted. She was searching for an honest, considerate man who could take care of himself and make her a priority.
An active pickleball player and enthusiastic traveler, Dottie had recently returned from a European Viking cruise. She was ready for more adventures, especially if she could share them with the right person.
Rick and Dottie’s matchmaker recognized how naturally their lives and hopes complemented one another. Both were Christians who attended church weekly. Their political views were compatible, and they were close in age. Each wanted a loving companion who was interested in travel and making the most of the years ahead.
Their first date was coffee, and Rick arrived knowing very little about Dottie. He had deliberately chosen not to ask for too many details before meeting her because he wanted to experience the introduction without overanalyzing it.
Afterward, both agreed that the date had gone well. Dottie felt that Rick met nearly everything she hoped to find in a partner. She appreciated that he was a good man whose values felt familiar to her, although she remained, in her words, “optimistically cautious.”
Rick was equally impressed. He was especially struck by her generosity and the care she showed others.
They soon made plans to walk around a lake together. A dinner date followed, giving them more time to discover whether the connection between them might grow into something deeper.
Within a few weeks, Rick and Dottie decided to place their memberships on hold so they could give the new relationship their full attention. Their matchmaker described them as “smitten,” and their own words revealed what had drawn them together.
“She is a giver and has a heart of gold,” Rick shared.
Dottie found in Rick the considerate and engaged partner she had been hoping to meet.
“He is kind, considerate, likes to do all kinds of activities, walks, nature walks, theatre, concerts, travel, etc.,” she said. “I want to give this relationship time to develop.”
Their connection was grounded in shared faith and a mutual desire to remain curious about life. Neither wanted simply to pass the time. They wanted a partner who would take the next walk, attend the next concert, and plan the next journey with them.
