For singles over 40, the right city can make a meaningful difference. A strong dating pool matters, but so do affordability, social opportunities, health, and the overall ease of building a satisfying life.

To identify the best places for singles over 40, we analyzed 100 of the largest U.S. metro areas across 25 metrics, from the density of single adults 40+ to rent costs, walkability, fitness access, social amenities, and life expectancy.

The result is a ranking of the cities that offer the strongest overall mix of dating potential, livability, and opportunity for this stage of life.

Key Findings

  • Madison, WI, ranks No. 1 overall with a city score of 67.77/100, followed by Portland, OR, and Albany, NY.
  • The five largest metros in the study all landed outside the top 50 overall, suggesting that bigger does not always mean better for singles over 40.
  • Springfield, MA, has the highest concentration of single men 40+ per 10,000 residents, while Daytona Beach, FL, has the highest concentration of single women 40+ per 10,000 residents.
  • Salt Lake City, UT, has the closest thing to a balanced singles ratio among adults 40+, with 85 single men for every 100 single women.
  • Madison ranks first for active singles over 40, Pittsburgh is the most affordable city for singles over 40, and Sarasota, FL, is the top city for new beginnings over 40.
  • Fort Myers, FL, leads the study for newcomer share among residents ages 40 to 65, while Washington, DC, has the highest share of adults 40+ with a bachelor’s degree or higher.

One pattern stands out right away: balance beats sheer scale. The top 15 skew heavily toward midsize metros, and the five largest metros in the study — New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, and Houston — all finished outside the top 50 overall. In other words, a better environment for singles over 40 is not just about being in the biggest city. It is about having the right mix of people, affordability, and lifestyle infrastructure.

The Standout Cities Across Key Ranking Factors

The overall ranking rewards cities that do many things well, but the category leaders reveal what different singles over 40 may value most.

For dating-pool size, Springfield, MA, had the highest concentration of single men 40+ at 1,049 per 10,000 residents, which is 34% above average. Daytona Beach, FL, had the highest concentration of single women 40+ at 1,453 per 10,000 residents, or 29% above average. Salt Lake City, UT, is notably balanced for singles, with 85 single men per 100 single women, making it 23% more balanced than the typical city.

Other cities stood out for the characteristics that can make dating over 40 feel more energizing and more practical. Fort Myers, FL, led the study for newcomer momentum, with 7.1% of residents ages 40 to 65 having recently moved there, which is 87% above average. San Francisco, CA, had the highest share of residents ages 40 to 65 at 33%, while Washington, DC, led on educational attainment, with 53% of adults 40+ holding a bachelor’s degree or higher, or 45% above average.

Health and longevity also played an important role. Provo, UT, had the lowest share of adults reporting poor or fair health at 12%, or 31% below average. San Jose, CA, recorded the highest average life expectancy at 83.7 years, which is 8% above average. Together, these leaders show that the “best” city for singles over 40 can look very different depending on whether you care most about dating pool size, newcomer energy, education, or long-term wellness.

Where Active Singles Over 40 Can Thrive

For many singles over 40, dating is not just about apps or introductions. It is also about living in a place where it feels easy to stay social, stay healthy, and meet people organically. To find the best cities for active singles over 40, we looked at factors such as walkability, fitness access, parks, social associations, racket sports, and health indicators.

The top five cities for active singles over 40 are:

  1. Madison, WI — 71.3
  2. Boston, MA — 68.5
  3. San Francisco, CA — 66.7
  4. Washington, DC — 66.3
  5. Buffalo, NY — 65.7

Madison’s first-place finish here helps explain its No. 1 overall ranking. The city offers exceptional fitness access, strong park availability, low unemployment, and a healthy overall profile. Boston, San Francisco, and Washington, DC, all benefit from high walkability and strong wellness indicators, while Buffalo’s mix of parks and singles density helped it break into the top five.

The Most Affordable Cities for Singles Over 40

Affordability can shape nearly every part of dating and daily life, especially for singles navigating housing costs on one income. This sub-ranking focused on factors such as rent, home values, income, cost of living, rent burden, housing mix, unemployment, and date-night costs.

The top five most affordable cities for singles over 40 are:

  1. Pittsburgh, PA — 77.1
  2. Wichita, KS — 76.6
  3. Cleveland, OH — 76.5
  4. Toledo, OH — 75.4
  5. Milwaukee, WI — 74.5

Pittsburgh took the top spot thanks to its low rent burden, comparatively low home values, and strong overall cost profile. Wichita stood out for having both the lowest rent burden and the cheapest date-night costs in the study. Toledo performed especially well on housing, with the lowest median gross rent and the second-lowest median home value. For singles over 40 looking to keep more room in the budget for hobbies, travel, and social life, these cities offer a compelling advantage.

The Best Cities for a Fresh Start Over 40

Sometimes dating over 40 comes with a bigger life shift: a move, a career change, a new routine, or the desire for a true reset. To identify the best cities for new beginnings over 40, we looked at newcomer migration, housing options, social associations, entertainment access, unemployment, walkability, and safety.

The top five cities for new beginnings over 40 are:

  1. Sarasota, FL — 68.2
  2. Madison, WI — 67.8
  3. Portland, OR — 66.2
  4. New Orleans, LA — 65.9
  5. Durham, NC — 65.0

Sarasota led this category with a strong mix of newcomer activity and social infrastructure, making it an especially appealing place for people starting fresh. Madison appears again thanks to its low unemployment, social access, and strong safety profile. Portland, New Orleans, and Durham each bring a different version of a fresh start, from social energy and entertainment access to education levels and employment strength.

Closing Thoughts

Dating over 40 is rarely about one variable. A large dating pool can help, but so can affordability, safety, health, and having enough social infrastructure to actually meet people in real life. The cities that rose to the top in this study are places where singles are more likely to find not just more people, but more ways to connect with them.

Methodology

To identify the best U.S. cities for singles over 40, we compared 100 of the largest U.S. metro areas, represented by their principal city, across 25 metrics in four weighted categories: Dating Market, Affordability, Social Life, and Healthy Living. Dating Market was weighted most heavily and included measures such as the density of single adults 40+, the ratio of single men 40+ to single women 40+, the share of residents ages 40 to 65, educational attainment among adults 40+, and the share of 40- to 65-year-olds who recently moved to the area.

Additional metrics included income, housing costs, rent burden, unemployment, date-night costs, housing mix, bars, restaurants, theater access, pickleball and tennis courts, social associations, walkability, fitness centers, parks, poor or fair health, life expectancy, and violent crime.

To create the final ranking, each metric was normalized to a 5-point scale. Metrics where lower values were more favorable — such as rent, unemployment, and violent crime — were reverse scored so that higher factor scores always reflected better outcomes. Weighted scores were then combined into a final city score out of 100.

We also created three editorial sub-rankings — Active Singles Over 40, Affordable Cities for Singles Over 40, and New Beginnings Over 40 — using subsets of relevant factors and a separate weighted scoring system for each.

For this study, “single” includes adults age 40+ who are never married, separated, widowed, or divorced. Data sources included the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 ACS 1-year estimates and 2024 population estimates, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Numbeo, MIT Living Wage Calculator, County Health Rankings, Walk Score, Trust for Public Land, NeighborhoodScout, Yellow Pages, Global Pickleball Network, and Global Tennis Network.

Data reflects the most recently available figures from each source at the time of analysis.
